I'm not feeling terribly "in the spirit" this Halloween. We've a great costume for Lyra (she's a dragon) that coincides with John's love for "Game of Thrones" ... but I'm torn on wearing a blonde wig and posing as Daenrys. Don't get me wrong - I love wigs, but I've spent so much time trying to be a role model who doesn't alter her natural hair for my students that I shudder to think about what wearing the wig might mean to them. Perhaps I'm the one with "the problem" and my students won't even notice. However I think it's important to make sure I'm modeling what I believe - that black women don't need to alter their hair to be accepted in professional society. Since I'm dressing up for play and NOT modeling a modern business woman, perhaps I will make my Halloweens "the day that I can straighten my hair or wear a wig or a weave." Or maybe I'll ending up dressing up as the Ice King with my Little Green Dragon... Hee hee! |
